খলিফা নীরবে শুনলেন বেগমের কথা। তারপর জিজ্ঞেস করলেনঃ বেগম, ওদের কি পরার মত জামা-কাপড় নেই ?
বেগম জবাব দিলেনঃ ওদের যে একবারেই পরার মত জামা কাপড় নেই তা নয়। তবে ওরা নতুন জামা কাপড়ের জন্যে বায়নাধরেছে।
খলিফা বললেনঃ এখন আমার পক্ষে নতুন জামা-কাপড় কেনা একেবারেই সম্ভব নয়। আমি বায়তুল মাল থেকে দৈনিক মাত্র দুই দেরহাম পাই। আমি তার বেশী কি করে খরচ করতে পারি। এই সম্পত্তিতো আমার নয়।

বেগম বললেনঃ আপনার কাছে আরজ, আপনি আজকের দুই দেরহাম ও আগামীকালকের দুই দেরহাম--মোট চার দেরহাম বায়তুল মাল থেকে তুলে দিন। এখুনি ছেলেদের জামা-কাপড়ের ব্যবস্থা করি।
খলিফা জবার দিলেন : আগামীকালতো এখনও আসেনি, আজকের দিনটিও শেষ হয়ে যায় নি। তাই আমার পক্ষে বায়তুল মাল থেকে এক কপর্দকও তুলে আনা সম্ভব নয়। তুমি আমাকে এই অনুরোধ করোনা।
বেগম আবার বললেনঃ আপনিতো রাজাধিরাজ, রাজ্যের সর্বময় কর্তা। কিছু অর্থ গ্রহণের কি অধিকার আপনার নেই?
খলিফা জবাব দিলেনঃ আমি আমার দেশ ও মানুষের তত্ত্বাবধায়ক মাত্র। আমি দু'দিনের তত্ত্বাবধানের কাজ শেষ করেই কেবল দু'দিনের বেতন নিতে পারি। আমি অগ্রিম চার দেরহাম গ্রহণ করবো কেমন করে? আমি যে আজ থেকে দু'দিন বেঁচে থাকবো, তার নিশ্চয়তা আছে কি?
বেগম এ কথার পর আর কিছু বলতে পারলেন না। ছেলেদের নিয়ে নীরবে খলিফার কক্ষ ত্যাগ করলেন।
The Begum said: I request you, give two dirhams today and two dirhams tomorrow - a total of four dirhams from Baitul Mal. I will arrange the boys' clothes immediately.
The Caliph replied: Tomorrow has not yet come, today is not over. So it is not possible for me to remove even one bag from Baitul Mal. Don't ask me this.
The Begum said again: You are Rajadhiraj, the supreme ruler of the kingdom. Do you not have the right to receive some money?
The Caliph replied: I am only the caretaker of my country and people. I can only take two days' salary after completing two days of supervisory work. How can I receive four dirhams in advance? I will live two days from today, is there a guarantee?
